Every time I go to type a degree symbol (°) in Linux, I seem to spend at least half an hour searching for the solution, so I thought I would write down here to remind me and help others. The easy way is to use Shift + Alt Gr + 0 which gives you °.
Alt Gr is that strange key just to the left of the space bar, that most people aren’t sure of what it for, well, here is one use 😉

This works for one of the keyboards I have in my list “English (intl., with AltGr Dead Keys)” but not the other main one that I use “Irish (Unicode Expert)”
Another way that works independently of keyboard layout is to type CTRL+SHIFT+U and then enter the unicode code (which you have to learn off) … in this case it’s ‘b0’ (b zero) but sometimes it can be a 4 digit code (zero zero b zero is the long form in this case).
I have CTRL+SHIFT+U+2014 burned in my brain for the em dash :—)
